Why jiu-jitsu

Built for the situations women actually describe

Ask women what they picture when they search for self-defense classes, and it is rarely a fair fight. It is a wrist grabbed and pulled. An arm seized. Being grabbed from behind, pushed against something, held down. Those are close-range, grappling problems — and grappling is exactly what Brazilian jiu-jitsu trains, every single class. Our women's program is led by the head of women's training at the academy — a female professor, a GFTeam black belt and IBJJF Pan Champion — in women's-only classes led in a women-first environment.

01

Break the grip

Freeing a grabbed wrist or arm is a technique, not a strength contest. You learn to use angles and your whole body — hips, legs, frames — so leverage does the work size doesn't have to.

02

Escape from underneath

The ground positions that matter most: protecting yourself underneath a heavier person, creating space, and escaping — drilled with partners who are genuinely trying to hold you, at a pace you control.

03

Get back to your feet

The goal is never to "win a fight." It is to get free, get up, and get away — and that sequence is what training rehearses, with real resistance, week after week.

04

Stay calm under pressure

Composure is a skill. Practicing calm breathing and clear thinking while someone bigger applies pressure is what turns a technique you've seen into something your body does when it counts.

Women's-only schedule · Takoma Park

Three women's-only sessions a week

Every session is women-only from warm-up to the last round — technique, partner drilling, and live practice with other women. Beginners train alongside experienced students from their first class, and coaches scale everything to your level.

Monday · 6:00 PM

Women's Only — No-Gi

Train in athletic clothes, with nothing to grip but wrists, arms, and body position — the closest format to everyday clothing situations.

Wednesday · 6:00 PM

Women's Only — Gi

The traditional uniform gives partners clothing to grab — collars, sleeves, jackets — realistic practice for grabs involving everyday clothes.

Saturday · 11:00 AM

Women's Only — Gi

A weekend session in the gi, same women's-only room — a good first class if weekday evenings are hard to reach.

Training in both formats matters: an escape that works with and without the uniform to grip is an escape you can trust. Read more on the full women's jiu-jitsu program page, or go deeper with our blog guide to what BJJ actually teaches you.

Your first class

What to expect, honestly

Your first class is a free trial — a real class with our regular students, not a sales session. Arrive about 15 minutes early in comfortable athletic clothes (no pockets or zippers) with a water bottle, check in at the door, and you'll be paired with a partner who knows it's your first day. Expect to learn one or two concrete escapes, practice them at a controlled pace, and leave clearer about what this training is.

Two ground rules protect every student in the room: tapping out stops everything, instantly, every time — and you can sit out any drill, any round, any day, no questions asked. Partners are matched thoughtfully by size and experience.

And the honest limit, stated plainly: no class — ours or anyone's — can guarantee your safety, and any program that promises that is selling you something false. What we offer instead is honest coaching, real technique practiced live, and a room full of women building the same skills beside you. Self-defense at WDC BJJ is part of a bigger picture, too — see how it runs through every program on our self-defense classes page.

Women's self-defense questions

Everything you're wondering

It's complete Brazilian jiu-jitsu, taught in women's-only classes — technique, partner drilling, live practice, and belt progression. Self-defense is a core outcome of that training, not a separate short course we sell. If you're looking for a one-weekend seminar, this isn't that; if you want skills that hold up because you practice them weekly, it is.

Yes — most women in the program started from zero. First classes focus on fundamentals, everything is scaled to your level, and you'll be paired with a partner who knows it's your first day. Your first class is a free trial, in a real class with our regular students.

Three times a week at our Takoma Park academy: Monday 6:00 PM (no-gi), Wednesday 6:00 PM (gi), and Saturday 11:00 AM (gi). Every session is women-only from warm-up to the last round.

Comfortable athletic clothes with no pockets or zippers, and a water bottle. Arrive about 15 minutes early and check in at the door. You don't need a uniform to try a class — and enrollment includes a free uniform.

No — and we'll never claim otherwise. No class can guarantee an outcome in an unpredictable situation. What training builds is real, practiced skill: escapes, composure, and reactions that come from drilling against real resistance, week after week. Awareness and judgment stay the first layer; training supports them.

Programs vary by how often you train, and we don't publish prices online. Come try a free class, and we'll walk you through the option that fits — with no contracts or long-term commitment.
