The OSS Rio Tour difference
This is not a normal BJJ camp.
You are not flying to Brazil to sit through seminars in a hotel ballroom. You are coming to train where Jiu-Jitsu was born - inside real Brazilian academies, next to Brazilian athletes - then walk out the door into one of the greatest cities on earth. This trip is built from inside the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community, not bolted onto a travel package.
Build relationships. Go home with stories you will remember forever.
Most people visit Rio as tourists and see the postcard. Our travelers step onto the mats at storied academies, share tables at local spots most visitors never find, and get welcomed into a community that treats Jiu-Jitsu like family - because here, it is.
The flagship returns to Rio de Janeiro July 12-18, 2027 - Monday to Sunday, 6 nights. Pricing is still being finalized; join the interest list to hear first when details are announced.
In the press - VoyageBaltimoreOSS Rio Tours brings "students from around the world to train in Rio de Janeiro, surf, enjoy Brazilian culture, and connect with the roots of Jiu-Jitsu."
Born in Rio de Janeiro state and raised in Brazil, Deivid started Jiu-Jitsu at 13 and never left the mats. Today he is a GFTeam black belt, academy owner, international competitor, and the head coach of GFTeam DC in Maryland - a Brazilian who built his life in the United States and now brings both worlds together.
"I don't want to show you Brazil like a tourist. I want to show you the Brazil that made me."
On an OSS Rio Tour, you don't get a tour guide reading a script. You get a professor walking you into his own community - the academies, the people, the tables and the beaches that raised him.

Jiu-Jitsu brought us together. Brazil is where the story began.
Train. Explore. Connect. The next crew is forming now - and the last two tours sold out.
Three things make an OSS Rio Tour: the training, the city, and the people. Here's how each one actually works.
01 - Jiu-Jitsu
Train where it was born
The training is the heart of the trip. The crew put in seven high-level training sessions with top GFTeam black belts - daily training at GFTeam HQ, a session at Embaixada do Jiu-Jitsu, and a visit to GFTeam HD Cachanga, where the group was received by GFTeam founder Júlio César Pereira himself.
Expect structured technical sessions, open mats, and rolls with Brazilian training partners of every level. Gi and no-gi both run. Exact academies and guest instructors are confirmed per tour - we only announce names once they're locked in.
Academy training
Real sessions in real Brazilian academies - not hotel seminars. Warm-ups, technique, and live rounds with local athletes.

Academy visits
Step into storied rooms like GFTeam HD Cachanga and feel what BJJ culture means where the art was built.

Train with legends
GFTeam founder Júlio César Pereira personally welcomed the crew at Cachanga. Access like this is the OSS difference.
02 - Rio de Janeiro
The city beyond the postcard
Rio is not a backdrop - it's half the experience. Between sessions you'll stand under Christ the Redeemer, cross Guanabara Bay by boat, watch the sun come up at Arpoador, and eat the way cariocas eat: rodízio at Carretão in Copacabana, a proper Brazilian BBQ night, açaí after training.
Copacabana and Ipanema for the beach days. Samba when the night calls for it. Surf lessons, paragliding and scooter rides for the ones who want more. Every itinerary is built per tour - the city always has the final say.

The icons
Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf, and the viewpoints that make Rio the most beautiful training camp on earth.

Beach life
Sunrise sessions at Arpoador, rolls on Ipanema, recovery in the Atlantic. The beach is our second academy.

Eat like a local
Rodízio night at Carretão, Brazilian BBQ, group tables every night. Nobody goes home hungry - or quiet.
03 - Brotherhood
Come for Jiu-Jitsu. Leave with a new family.
Ask anyone from the first two tours what they remember and they won't start with the techniques. They'll tell you about the table that wouldn't stop laughing, the training partner from São Paulo who became a friend for life, the last-night feeling that nobody wanted the week to end.
That's by design. Small groups. Shared houses. Group dinners. One crew, all week. People arrive as travelers and leave as a team - and they keep training together long after they're home.

The mats brought the crew together. The week built the brotherhood.
Rio de Janeiro returns July 12-18, 2027 - Monday to Sunday, 6 nights. Join the interest list for the flagship tour, or bring your whole academy on a private trip.
How booking works: apply, meet the team, lock your spot with a deposit. Payment plans are available - your remaining balance is split into installments before departure. When a tour fills, the button becomes a waitlist. No fake countdowns, no pressure games.

Professor Deivid Dias
Founder, OSS Rio Tour
The professor behind the tour
Deivid Dias was born in Nova Iguaçu and raised in São João de Meriti, in Rio de Janeiro state. He stepped onto a Jiu-Jitsu mat at 13 years old - and the mat never let him go. The kid from São João de Meriti became a GFTeam black belt in the direct Fadda lineage, an international competitor, and eventually the founder of GFTeam DC in Maryland.
He has lived both lives: the Brazilian academy kid and the American academy owner. OSS Rio Tour exists in the space between them - Deivid personally bridges the international BJJ community and the Brazil that raised him.
"I don't want to show you Brazil like a tourist. I want to show you the Brazil that made me."

Head Coach - GFTeam DC
Founder and head coach of WDC BJJ / GFTeam DC in Takoma Park, Maryland - a family-first academy he has built since 2015.
Entrepreneur
Owner of Nebula Kimonos, founder of Chama Fights, and creator of the GFTeam DC Instructor Course - building across the whole BJJ ecosystem.
The bridge
Brazilian culture, Rio de Janeiro, academy life, and what a first-time visitor actually needs - Deivid understands both worlds because he lives in both.

The honest answers - including the ones we confirm personally with every applicant.
Who can come
Is OSS Rio Tour only for BJJ practitioners?
The tour is built around Jiu-Jitsu, but non-training partners and family members are welcome - couples and kids joined us in Rio, and family stays are a core part of the private-suite option in Barra da Tijuca. If you don't train, you'll still live the whole week: beaches, landmarks, food and the crew.
Can beginners and white belts attend?
Yes. White belts train on every tour. Sessions are structured so every level gets real value - you'll drill, learn, and roll at your pace with Brazilian training partners. Many travelers take their first-ever class in Brazil with us.
Can black belts attend?
Absolutely - black belts get the deepest version of the experience: high-level sessions with top Brazilian black belts (the crew trained seven high-level sessions with GFTeam black belts) and open-mat rounds with serious local athletes.
What belt levels participate?
All of them - white through black, kids included on family-friendly editions. The mix is part of the magic: you'll share the mat with hobbyists, competitors, coaches and academy owners.
Can my spouse or family come if they don't train?
Yes. Non-training partners join every beach day, landmark, dinner and experience. Families can also book the private beach-house suite in Barra da Tijuca, which fits up to four.
Do I need to compete?
No. There is no competition on the tour. Train as hard as you want - the only opponent is the buffet line at the rodízio.
Training
How much training will we do?
Training is daily. Tours run seven high-level sessions across the week, mixing academy training, academy visits, open mats and beach sessions. Final schedules are published per tour.
Do I need a gi? Can I train no-gi?
Bring both. Brazilian academies run gi and no-gi sessions, and our tours roll in both - plus beach training in boardshorts. Pack a gi, a rashguard set, and sandals for the mat edge.
How physically demanding is the tour?
You choose your intensity. Sessions are real training, but nobody is forced through every round - travelers sit out, watch, film, or jump into the ocean instead. Beach days and downtime are built into every schedule.
Travel & logistics
Are flights included?
No - international airfare is never included in OSS Rio Tour packages. What is included: airport transfers on arrival and departure (confirmed per tour - yes, someone meets you).
Which airport should I use?
For Rio, use Galeão International Airport (GIG). Airport transportation is included on our tours - we'll confirm your pickup details once you're booked.
Where do we stay?
Recent Rio tours stayed in a luxury penthouse/mansion in Copacabana with ocean-view breakfasts. Your exact stay is confirmed before you book.
Is Rio safe?
We don't make absolute promises - we run organized group travel with local knowledge: planned routes, group movement, local hosts, and Professor Deivid, who grew up in Rio state, leading the way. Two tours, 45 travelers, zero incidents we couldn't laugh about later. Read the Safety & Travel page for how we prepare.
Do I need a visa?
Visa rules depend on your passport and they change. Check the current requirements for Brazil with the official consulate for your nationality before you travel - and bring a passport valid for your full trip. When you apply, tell us your nationality and we'll flag anything we know applies.
Do I need travel insurance?
We strongly recommend it for every traveler - it protects your trip investment and covers you on and off the mats. Tour payments are non-refundable, which makes insurance even smarter.
What currency does Brazil use? Will I need Portuguese?
Brazil uses the Brazilian real (R$); cards are widely accepted and we guide the crew on cash and exchange. And no - you don't need Portuguese. Deivid is Brazilian, the tour runs in English and Portuguese, and by day three you'll be saying "oss" and "valeu" like a local anyway.
Can I extend my trip before or after the tour?
Yes - many travelers do. Talk to us when you apply and we'll help you plan around the tour dates. The private suite in Barra da Tijuca is a favorite way to add family days in Rio.
Booking & money
What is included - and what isn't?
Every tour publishes its own lists once details are confirmed. The pattern: stay, training, breakfast, signature experiences and airport transfers are in; flights, passport/visa costs, travel insurance, unscheduled meals, personal purchases, optional activities and alcohol are out. See the Itinerary page for the current list.
How do booking and deposits work? What if I cancel?
Apply, meet the team, then a $500 deposit confirms your reservation. Payment plans split the rest before departure. Tour payments are non-refundable - that's why we recommend travel insurance. Your exact terms are confirmed with you before any money moves.
What happens after I apply?
We review your application, reach out personally (usually on WhatsApp), answer your questions, and - if it's a fit - send your deposit link. Then you join the pre-trip group chat and start meeting your crew before you ever board the plane.
First time in Brazil? You're exactly who this tour was designed for. Here's how we run it - organized, prepared, and local-led.
OSS Rio Tour moves as an organized group with local hosts who know the destination - for Rio, that starts with Professor Deivid, who grew up in Rio state. We won't ever promise "100% safe" anywhere on Earth. What we promise is preparation, local knowledge, and a crew that looks out for each other.
Passport & visa
Bring a passport valid for your full trip. Visa rules vary by nationality and change - check your consulate's official guidance early. Tell us your nationality when you apply and we'll share what we know.
Travel insurance
Strongly recommended for every traveler - it protects a non-refundable trip and covers training bumps, travel hiccups and the unexpected.
Emergency contacts
Before departure you get the tour's contact sheet: hosts, accommodation, and local emergency numbers. The pre-trip group chat keeps everyone connected all week.
Getting around
Airport transfers are included, and official itinerary transport is planned. Outside the itinerary, we brief the crew on the smart options - and the ones to skip.
Your belongings
Travel like a local: phone awareness at the beach, valuables left at the stay, copies of documents in the cloud. We brief every crew on arrival-day habits.
Money
Brazil runs on the real (R$) - cards are widely accepted, with some cash useful for the beach and street food. We flag exchange spots; never change money with strangers.
Staying connected
Local SIM/eSIM guidance goes out pre-trip so you land connected. Portuguese isn't required - the tour runs in English and Portuguese, and data + translation apps cover the rest.
What to pack
A gi, rashguard and shorts for no-gi, sandals, a light layer for air-conditioned transfers, reef-safe sunscreen, and room in your bag - you will bring Brazil home with you.
The crew rule
We move together, we look out for each other, nobody wanders off solo at night. It's how 45 travelers across two tours all came home with nothing but stories.

Field notes from a lifetime on the mats - the reading list we send every applicant.
Guide | Training
Training Jiu-Jitsu in Rio de Janeiro
Rio is the birthplace of the art, and its academies still set the standard. Expect structured warm-ups, deep technical sessions, and open mats where a purple belt you've never met treats you like a teammate. Show up humble, tap early, bring a gift patch from your home academy - doors open fast.
Guide | Packing
What to pack for a BJJ trip to Brazil
One gi (it dries fast in Rio sun - or bring two), rashguard and shorts for no-gi and beach sessions, sandals, a mouthguard, tape, and reef-safe sunscreen. Leave the fancy gear home: academies are about the training, not the wardrobe.
Guide | Culture
Gi vs no-gi in Brazil
Both run everywhere - gi in the mornings and evenings at most academies, no-gi woven through the week, and beach rolls whenever the crew feels like it. Brazilian gyms take both seriously; bring your full kit and you'll never sit out a session.
Guide | Food
Brazilian food BJJ travelers should try
Start with rodízio (Carretão in Copacabana is our farewell table), a true churrasco BBQ night, açaí the Brazilian way after training, pão de queijo at breakfast, and feijoada when it lands on a Saturday. Hydrate like it's your job.
Guide | First trip
What first-time visitors should know about Rio
Rio rewards the prepared: fly into GIG, ride with arranged transfers, keep beach belongings simple, learn five words of Portuguese (obrigado goes a long way), and let locals lead. It's a city of neighborhoods - Copacabana energy, Ipanema sunsets, Barra calm.
Guide | History
BJJ history in Rio de Janeiro
Our lineage runs straight through it: Maeda to Luiz França, Oswaldo Fadda, Monir Salomão, Júlio César Pereira - the Fadda line built champions outside the famous names' shadow. Training in Rio means rolling inside that history, not reading about it.
Turn your team's dream trip into the retention event of the decade - owners and coaches travel as leaders, not organizers.
Custom dates & itinerary
Pick your window and your mix: heavy training, heavy tourism, or the classic OSS balance of both.
Customized training
Sessions shaped around your team's level and goals, inside the academies our public tours visit - and beyond.
