Competition Team Training: How Students Grow Into Competing
Nobody is required to compete here — and nobody who wants to is left to figure it out alone. How the path from regular classes to the competition team actually works.
Competing in jiu-jitsu is a choice, and at WDC BJJ in Takoma Park it stays one: plenty of our students train for years purely for the art, the fitness, and the room, and they are the backbone of the academy. But for students who want to test themselves, there is a real path — and it doesn’t start with a tournament. It starts with regular classes.
The foundation is the regular program
Competitors are made in ordinary training: the same classes everyone takes, attended with unusual consistency. Technique learned slowly and correctly beats a bag of tricks, and the conditioning, composure, and problem-solving that tournaments reward are exactly what twice-a-week training builds. Students who compete are first students who show up.
The competition layer
On top of that base sits the competition layer. Kids who want it join the Kids Competition Team, Fridays at 5:00 PM inside our kids program. Adults aiming at tournaments train in the advanced and competition sessions, where preparation sharpens: game plans around a student’s strengths, harder rounds, and the details of rules and scoring. Our coaching team includes champions — Professor Deivid’s own career spans IBJJF Pan American and American National titles — so students prepare under people who have stood where they’re heading.
Honest expectations
A first tournament is a learning event, full stop. Win or lose, a student comes home knowing things about their game that months of class can’t teach — and knowing whether competing is for them at all. We’ll never promise medals. What we promise is preparation: nobody from this academy walks into a bracket unready, uncoached, or unsure of the rules.
If your child — or you — is curious
The door is a normal class, tried free: kids at weekday 5:00 PM or Saturday 9:00 AM, adults across the morning and evening schedule. Book a free trial, train for a while, and let the interest grow at its own speed. That’s how every competitor here started.
Your first class is free.
