The thinking player's coach

Kate Parish
Kate Parish is a GFTeam purple belt under Professor Deivid Dias and the kids coach at WDC BJJ in Takoma Park. She has practiced jiu-jitsu for seven years — and she still trains like a student, which is exactly what makes her such a good teacher.
Kate is the thinking player's coach. She doesn't just show a technique; she explains why it works, in words a six-year-old can follow and an eleven-year-old can build on. Kids leave her classes understanding the idea behind the move, not just copying the motion — and that understanding is what sticks when the round gets hard.
The photo above is Kate at floor level, tying a young student's white belt before class. That's her coaching in one picture: patient, precise, and never too busy for the small things. A kid whose belt is tied right stands a little taller walking onto the mat — Kate knows it, and she takes the time, every time.
On the kids mat she is warm, organized, and completely unhurried, with a sharp eye for the quiet child at the edge of the group. Parents watching her class see structure; kids in her class just see the coach who knows their name, notices their effort, and makes the hard parts make sense.
"One of the smartest people at our gym."
That's how Professor Deivid Dias describes Coach Kate — a practitioner who studies the art as seriously as she teaches it, and whose students get the benefit of both.
