Purple, Brown, Black: The Long Belts of Jiu-Jitsu

White and blue are about learning the art. The belts after that are about becoming it — a look at the long second half of the journey.

Most people picture a black belt as the finish line of martial arts. In Brazilian jiu-jitsu, the students who hold one will tell you something stranger: it’s roughly the halfway point of understanding. This post is about the long belts — purple, brown, and black — what changes at each, and why a serious academy like ours in Takoma Park is in no hurry to hand them out.

Purple belt: the game becomes yours

Blue belt teaches you the art; purple is where it becomes yours. Purple belts have positions they own, attacks that chain together by instinct, and the beginnings of a personal style shaped by their body and temperament. They also start giving back — newer students learn faster in a room with good purple belts in it, and ours are expected to be part of that teaching culture.

Brown belt: pressure and detail

Brown is the refinement belt. The techniques are the same ones a white belt learns; the difference is timing, pressure, and a hundred small details stacked on each other until the simple moves become nearly unstoppable. Brown belts often coach classes and corner teammates at competitions — they are, in every way but the certificate, already teachers.

Black belt: a standard, not a ceremony

Across the sport, black belt commonly represents a decade or more of consistent training. Its real meaning is trustworthiness: a black belt’s technique, judgment, and character have been watched for years by the people who promoted them. Our head coach, Professor Deivid Dias, earned his in the Fadda lineage under GFTeam — the line running from Maeda and Luiz França through Oswaldo Fadda and Júlio César Pereira. When he ties a belt on a student, that lineage is what stands behind it.

Why the slowness is the point

Belts at WDC BJJ are decided on attendance, attitude, and skill — never sold, never scheduled, never guaranteed. That can feel slow in a world of instant everything. It’s also exactly why a WDC BJJ belt is believed in any academy on earth. The whole map — kids’ belts included — is on our Belt Journey page, and every journey on it starts with one free class.
