Kids’ Belts and Stripes: How Promotions Work for Young Students

Gray, yellow, orange, green — and four stripes between each. A parent’s guide to the kids’ belt system and what a promotion really means.

Few moments in our academy beat a kids’ promotion: the whole room quiet, a coach calling a name, a small student walking up to receive a stripe while their teammates applaud like it’s the world final. Parents ask us how it all works — what the colors mean, when a child is “due,” and what coaches are actually looking for. Here is the honest answer from WDC BJJ in Takoma Park.

The kids belt path

Children follow the youth belt system used across Brazilian jiu-jitsu: white, then the gray family (gray-white, gray, gray-black), the yellow family, the orange family, and the green family — the last steps before the adult ranks in the teen years. Between belts, kids earn up to four stripes. The full map is on our Belt Journey page.

What coaches look for

Three things: attendance, attitude, and skill. Attendance, because jiu-jitsu is learned by showing up — a stripe often recognizes a season of consistency. Attitude, because how a child treats partners, listens, and handles a hard round is part of the art itself. Skill, because the technique has to be real: escapes that work, positions held, movements that show up in live practice, not just in drills.

What promotions are not

They are not scheduled by the calendar, not tied to a fee, and not guaranteed by time served. Two children who start the same month may be promoted months apart, and both are on a perfectly healthy path. That standard is what makes a belt mean something when your child wears it — and what makes promotion day feel the way it does.

How parents can help

Bring them consistently, let the coaches coach, and celebrate effort at home more than rank. When a promotion comes, be there — it happens in class, with families part of the moment. And if you’re wondering where your child stands, ask us at the door; we’re always glad to talk about a student’s progress.
