Your First No-Gi Class: What It Feels Like and What to Expect
No uniform, faster grips, same art — a walkthrough of your first no-gi session, from the door to the last round.
Every jiu-jitsu student remembers their first no-gi class, usually because of one sensation: speed. Without the gi’s collars and sleeves to grab, everything slides a little faster. If you’re thinking about trying a no-gi session at WDC BJJ in Takoma Park — no-gi classes run every week on our schedule — here is what the hour actually feels like.
What you wear, what you bring
No-gi is the easy wardrobe: a rash guard or fitted athletic shirt, shorts or leggings without pockets or zippers, and a water bottle. That’s it — your first class is a free trial, and no uniform is required. (If you fall for the gi later, enrollment includes a free uniform.)
The first fifteen minutes
You’ll check in at the door, meet the coach, and warm up with the group: movement drills built from jiu-jitsu itself — hip escapes, technical stand-ups, rolls. Then the coach teaches one technique in small steps. In no-gi, grips live on wrists, arms, neck, and body position instead of cloth, so the details are about angles and underhooks rather than grabbing sleeves.
Drilling, then rounds — at your pace
You’ll drill with a partner, taking turns, while coaches circulate and correct. Live rounds come last and are always supervised; for a first-timer they are optional, and partners are matched with your experience in mind. Tapping stops everything, instantly, every time — that rule holds in every format we teach.
Gi or no-gi first?
Honestly: whichever class fits your schedule this week. The positions and escapes underneath are the same art; the handles differ. Many of our students train both. Start with one free class, then try the other format in week two and see which one pulls you back.
Your first class is free.
A real class with Professor Deivid’s coaching team and our regular students. No experience needed, no payment, no contract for a trial — and enrollment includes a free uniform.
